As if a countdown to the end of the world, 847 kids got bombarded earlier this month on Facebook from a newbie band with a big name, Universe. The spammerific quintets are promoting the launch of their free digital EP available for download via their bandcamp.
The 3 songs are well worth the email address you have to give in return for the goods but I wouldn’t expect to see a radio hit out of this freshman release. The EP does get some street cred for being produced by local guitar prodigy Max Stegel who has been a part of several indie level success stories including the band Empires. As for Universe’s EP, the song “Hideaway” appears to be the weak link in this short chain, it’s a very busy song with flat climaxes. Luckily, the leader of the pack rightfully titled “Confidence” makes up for the slightly boring dud. It’s an up beat, classic pop punk song clearly influenced by Allister and the local scene from the late 90’s early 2000’s. Sealing the deal for me however, was “Downin,” a clear reflection of the music of your youth, if you ever sported the black plastic bracelets, a Ramones tshirt and a Simple Plan pin. The beat never lets you get distracted, the flow of lyrics is constant and it leaves you ready for the next slightly addictive tune.
They may not be your most played songs on iTunes, but they are free, decent, and it beats nearly all mainstream radio songs. Go, scurry to the universe bandcamp and download the EP, maybe even throw a buck or two down, its worth it.
If you happen to be in the northern Chicago area at the end of the month do not miss their March 27th, Elk Grove show with Jamestown Story. No idea why Minnesota emonite and Chicagoland pop punkers are coming together but it’s a good bond, like super glue to its actual intended objects…
Download Universe, don’t miss their show with Jamestown Story and give us your feedback on the EP.
